This woodblock print on paper was created with the intention of showing that we are all created in God’s image, regardless of our differences.
The two colors orange and violet play with the spectrum of binary vs. nonbinary expressions.
All the species portrayed are intentional but certainly not comprehensive suggestions of nature’s sex and gender diversity. Clownfish and green frogs can change their sex, seahorse males carry their young, and many plants including the lily have both male and female sex organs in their blossoms.
The people portrayed suggest a spectrum of sex and gender identities but of course are just a drop in the oceans of human expressions. There’s a man like Jesus with long hair rising out of the water, and a woman emerging too. There is a male belly dancer, and a female water polo player. And there is a child who has their whole life to figure out gender.
Let us treat one another, especially children, with gentleness as they figure out or continue to embrace their identities reflecting the gorgeous diversity of God. Our male, female, LGBTQIA+, mother, father, child, Genderful God!
