Kingfisher

Carved basswood, pyrography, ink

The kingfisher, for me, is a symbol of wildlife in my city, Boise, Idaho with all of its urban development pushing into once-wild spaces, such as the Boise River. Because of human population growth, the kingfisher is displaced and its marginalized living areas decrease riparian diversity and make it harder for birders to spot. This painting celebrates precious wildlife as natural spaces struggle with human-made spaces to exist together.
