Summer Creativity Works

The month of August was filled with celebrations for my family and friends: lots of birthdays and anniversaries, and other special occasions. To keep up each year, I create work starting as early as the kiss of spring.

I don’t have any of the following works available in my store, yet. But if you think any of them merit the status of being professionally printed on cards, I’d love to hear your opinion. Just fill out the form on my contact page to share your thoughts!

Foster

This first work is a woodburning of my cousin’s beloved doggy Foster. Not for any particular occasion this time, but just because my cousin and Foster have such a long-lived and beautiful relationship that I admire.

Foster. Ink and woodburning on basswood. Approximately 9″x8″

Foster accompanies my cousin almost everywhere, and she is so proud of him that she asks everyone, multiple times each day, “Isn’t he handsome?” Perhaps this subconsciously was the reason why I chose to paint him… Because he’s handsome!

Ducks and Chickens

These next two works were inspired by neighbor’s animals, ducks and chickens. They were created to celebrate birthdays and friends’ work achievements.

Each animal has its own funny personality that comes through in these woodblock prints, wouldn’t you agree?

Sugar Maple Anniversary

My parents recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary, and I wracked my brains for some kind of image from their courtship in Indiana. I could not find whatever a “Hoosier” is – however, I suffered through reading the ridiculous poem from which the state adopted “Hoosier.” This did not lend itself to visual inspiration, so I chose a well-established Indiana tree, the sugar maple, with its beautiful foliage.

Ant, Spider, and Heron

My photographer friend, Marc Jourdenais, often inspires me with his excellent work. The next woodblock prints were created, with his permission, using images he captured with close focus, and also macro photography.

Menacing Spider Woodblock
Heron Woodblock

These prints got some mileage, spanning seven special summertime occasions of birthdays and anniversaries.

Again, please do let me know if you feel strongly that any of these images should make the journey from hand-pulled print… onto cards I offer in my store! Depending on the response, perhaps most of them will!
